IDC: Global large-size panel shipments decline by 0.8% in 20

2015-06-23

According to the latest research report by International Data Corporation (IDC) (IDC Worldwide Large Sized LCD Panel Qview, Q12015), global shipments of large-size LCD display panels are expected to decline by 0.8% to 851 million pieces in 2015 due to stagnant growth in global demand for information electronics products.

In the first quarter of 2015, the global shipment of large-sized LCD panels reached 202 million pieces, an increase of 2.1% compared to the first quarter of 2014, but a decline of 14.1% compared to the fourth quarter of 2014. It is expected that the quarterly growth rate of shipment volume in the second quarter of 2015 will return to a positive growth trend.

Chen Jianzhu, a market analyst from IDC's global hardware assembly research team, pointed out that due to the weak demand for downstream application products in the panel market in 2015, the estimated global shipment quantities of laptops, monitor screens, and tablets have declined compared to the previous year, which will also have an impact on LCD panel shipments.

In addition, although LCD TVs are expected to continue the 2014 replacement craze this year, the strengthening of the US dollar has led to an increase in terminal prices, affecting consumer purchasing intentions. It is estimated that global TV shipments will grow by 3.1% in 2015, but it is still difficult to increase the total global shipment of large-sized LCD display panels in 2015.

When it comes to the competitive situation among LCD panel manufacturers, the IDC report points out that in the first quarter of 2015, the top five global manufacturers of large-sized LCD panels were LG Display (LGD), Samsung Display (SDC), Innolux, AUO, BOE, and others.

Looking ahead to the supply and demand situation of the global display panel industry in 2015, Xu Meiwen, Senior Research Manager of IDC's Global Hardware Assembly Research Team, believes that due to the sluggish demand for downstream end products of panels and the continuous expansion of production capacity by panel manufacturers, it is expected that all types of LCD display panels, except for mainstream TV panels, will experience oversupply. Therefore, panel prices are likely to continue to decline.
