The Difference between AG Glass and AR Glass

2017-05-10

In today's society, the frequency of contact with electronic devices among the general public is increasing. We all have experiences of being attacked by glare in our lives, some coming from the glare sources themselves, and others from the reflection of glare. When operating computers, we often find it troublesome to see the display content clearly due to the reflection of objects outside the monitor on its surface; these are all caused by light reflection on glass surfaces, as ordinary glass has a high reflectivity. To reduce the impact of reflected light from glass, applying anti-glare (low-reflectivity) treatment to the glass surface can be very effective.

Ordinary glass has a single-sided reflectance of about 4% within the visible light spectrum, and a total spectral reflectance of approximately 8%. The anti-reflective effect on the surface of glass within the visible light range can be achieved in two ways: one is to use the interference effect produced by different optical material film layers to eliminate incident and reflected light, thereby increasing the transmittance. This type of glass produced using the destructive interference of light is called AR glass; the other method is to use the scattering effect of a rough surface to convert a large amount of incident light into diffuse reflected light, which does not significantly change the transmittance. This type of glass produced by fine roughening is called AG glass.

AG anti-glare glass, also known as non-reflective glass, is produced by a special chemical etching process on the glass surface, which can be one or both sides. Its characteristic is that it transforms the original reflective surface of the glass into a matte, diffused reflection surface. This reduces glare and light reflections, decreases shadows, and enhances the anti-corrosion and scratch resistance of the product surface. When combined with video imaging screens, it can form transparent anti-glare, anti-reflective screens, solving the problems of glare and reflections caused by environmental light sources on electronic display screens and image screens, thereby improving the quality of the images. This effect remains unchanged at large viewing angles, providing a uniform, flat, and light-dispersed surface for high-resolution use scenarios.

AG anti-glare glass, also known as non-reflective glass, can disperse reflected light, allowing users to concentrate on the transmitted image. There are several qualities and levels of etching for non-reflective glass. From frame quality to monitor quality, gloss values range from 35 to 110. The lower the gloss value, the more dispersed the light source on the surface of the glass. The more dispersed the surface light source, the less glare the user can see, however, the dispersion of the light source is inversely proportional to the resolution of the panel.

AR high-transmittance anti-reflective glass, also known as antireflective or reflective reduction glass

AR glass is made by applying an optical coating on one or both sides of the glass to reduce reflectivity and thereby increase light transmission, decrease surface glare, and enhance the transparency and brightness of the substrate. It also provides better contrast clarity by reducing the surface reflectivity of specific wavelengths of light. Compared to ordinary glass, it has a lower reflectance ratio, reducing the light reflectance to below 1%. Applying an AR coating on the glass surface can minimize and possibly eliminate ghosting and multiple reflections. The AR coating can be single or multi-layer, with standard broadband AR being able to reduce the surface reflectivity from 4% to 0.5%.
